County Supervisor William G. Steiner announced Friday that he has earmarked $50,000 of county recreation money for the Boys and Girls Club of Anaheim.

Mike Sofia, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, said the money will go toward completion of a 5,460-square-foot facility at East Broadway and Philadelphia Street.

“We are very appreciative of Supervisor Steiner’s efforts,” he said. “This will go a long way towards helping us move forward with our new club facility.”

He said the facility will enable the club to double its 600-youth membership and increase club activities. The new club will include a wood shop, a library, a computer room and an arts and crafts room.

Steiner said he allocated $50,000 from a $400,000 discretionary account called the Urban Parks Fund. Each supervisor has such an account that he or she can use to assist various recreational facilities or endeavors.

“I am happy to be of assistance and pleased to hear the new facility will enable them to provide opportunities to a larger number of children,” Steiner said.
