Council to Consider Bus Link to Train

To encourage commuters to use public transportation, the Thousand Oaks City Council on Tuesday will consider chartering a bus to run from The Oaks mall to the Metrolink Commuter Rail Station in Moorpark.

The bus would run Monday through Friday, picking up commuters in the mall’s park-and-ride lot at 5:25 a.m. and 7 a.m. Evening trips would depart for Thousand Oaks about 7 p.m. and 7:40 p.m.

“Certainly the earthquake and the resulting transportation problem are a great impetus in prompting people to change the way they think about getting to work,” Councilwoman Judy Lazar said. Offering the express bus service--at $1 per trip--might persuade some drivers who have so far stuck with their cars to try public transportation, she added.

Running the bus for a five-month trial period will cost about $38,500, according to Roy Myers, the city’s transportation analyst. But the federal government is expected to pick up most of that cost through FEMA loans. The remaining expenses would be offset by revenue from the dollar-a-ride fares.

The council will vote on the issue during the early part of Tuesday’s meeting, which begins at 5 p.m.
