COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Loss to Notre Dame Drops UCLA All the Way to No. 9

UCLA, which dropped from No. 1 to No. 3 in the Associated Press college basketball poll after losing to California, fell to No. 9 after Saturday’s loss to Notre Dame.

North Carolina, which beat Duke in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown last Thursday, returned to No. 1 Monday, receiving 60 first-place votes and 1,617 points from the national media panel.

The Tar Heels (19-3), the preseason No. 1 coming off their national championship, held the spot for the first week of the regular season and have now had it twice during the run of six polls with a different top team.

Duke (16-2) switched places with North Carolina, receiving three first-place votes and 1,486 points. The Blue Devils were the record sixth school to be No. 1 this season, but like North Carolina, Kansas and UCLA, they lost in the week they moved to the top.

MONDAY’S GAMES

Georgetown 60, No. 14 Syracuse 56--Othella Harrington scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead the Hoyas (13-6, 7-4) to a Big East Conference victory over the Orangemen (15-4, 8-4) at Landover, Md.

Adrian Autry made a driving layup with 27.4 seconds remaining to pull Syracuse within 57-56.

Georgetown then turned the ball over on the following inbounds play, but Lawrence Moten missed an open 15-foot shot with 19 seconds to play.

Harrington made three of four free throws in the last 10 seconds.

Randy Rutherford scored 27 points and made a school-record eight three-point shots to lead Oklahoma State (16-6, 5-2) to an 86-68 Big Eight Conference victory over Oklahoma (12-7, 3-4) at Stillwater, Okla. . . . Ricky Daniels made an 18-foot jumper with nine seconds to play in overtime, giving North Carolina State (7-13) a 72-70 victory over Tennessee (4-15) at Knoxville, Tenn.

Pennsylvania (15-2) put together runs of 12-0 at the start of the game and 21-0 at the start of the second half in a 77-52 victory over Buffalo (5-16) at Buffalo, N.Y. . . . Michael Venson scored 27 points to help James Madison (14-6, 7-2) to an 89-85 Colonial Athletic Conference victory over William & Mary (2-18, 1-8) at Williamsburg, Va.
