A young Marine, who kidnaped his estranged wife and killed two people who tried to intervene, died Tuesday of wounds from shooting himself.

Lance Cpl. Timothy Clemons, 22, of Chicago died at 2:45 p.m., said Naval Hospital spokeswoman Pat Neal in San Diego. Clemons had been in the hospital since shooting himself at noon Monday, when he was confronted by a military police officer at his former barracks at Camp Pendleton.

Clemons kidnaped his estranged wife Sunday night as she left work at a Carlsbad mall, police said. He shot to death two of her friends who tried to stop the kidnaping, authorities said. The young Marine fled to Mexico with his wife, Debra Hearn.

Hearn managed to persuade her husband to return to the United States on Monday morning and free her, officials said. She was unhurt.

Clemons returned to his old barracks at Camp Pendleton. Someone at the barracks called police and when an MP approached with a gun and ordered Clemons to surrender, Clemons shot himself, said base Master Sgt. John Farrell.
