WEEKEND TV : Games Begin, Reindeer and All, on CBS

The much anticipated Olympic Winter Games begin tonight on CBS, from Lillehammer, Norway, with the opening ceremony, downhill skiing practice and ice hockey highlighting the festivities. Dancers, singers, fiddlers and reindeer perform in a tribute to Lapp and Norwegian folk culture, 8 p.m., Channels 2 and 8.

On Sunday, CBS offers all-day coverage beginning at 11 a.m. and continues it through prime time with alpine skiing (men’s downhill), figure skating, ice hockey (United States vs. France), speedskating, luge and cross-country skiing.

Discussions on several of the weekend’s public service programs will center around possible NATO-sponsored air strikes in Bosnia and the fate of President Clinton’s health-care plan.
