COLLEGE SIGNINGS : Buyukuncu to Swim for Michigan; Oetgen Signs With UC Davis

Woodbridge’s Derya Buyukuncu, The Times Orange County swimmer of the year in 1993, has made an oral commitment to attend Michigan, his club coach, David Salo of the Irvine Novaquatics, said Friday.

Buyukuncu set a national high school record in the 100-yard backstroke at the 1993 Southern Section meet and was first in the 100- and 200-meter back events at the U.S. Open last year.

Buyukuncu, who moved to Orange County in 1991, is a native of Istanbul, Turkey, and swam for his country in the 1992 Olympics.

He selected Michigan over Stanford and California.

San Clemente lineman Gage Oetgen has signed a letter of intent to play football at UC Davis, Aggie Coach Anthony Franks said.

Oetgen, 6 feet 2, 275 pounds, was a first-team All-South Coast League selection last season.

Cheryl Williams of Corona del Mar, a sweeper on the girls’ soccer team, has orally committed to UCLA, her mother said.

Williams, a four-year starter, will receive a partial scholarship. She plans to sign a letter of intent with the Bruins next week.
