Irving Allen Mathews; Banker, Co-Founder of San Antonio Spurs
Irving Allen Mathews, 76, former banker, president of Frost Bros. retail stores and a founder of the San Antonio Spurs. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Mathews studied at the University of Michigan and served as an Army captain in World War II. He began his 41-year career with the San Antonio-based Frost Bros. in 1945 as a fashion buyer. He became president in 1963 and chief executive officer in 1971. He served as chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas from 1972 to 1973 and was a director of the Frost National Bank of San Antonio from 1981 until his death. He was a founding stockholder in the San Antonio Spurs National Basketball Assn. team. On Feb. 4 in San Antonio of complications from surgery.
