COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Moorpark Drops Bomb on Cuesta Again

For the second time this season, Moorpark College hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to defeat Cuesta in a Western State Conference basketball game.

Sean Martin’s desperation 35-footer as time expired lifted the Raiders to an 85-84 victory Friday night at Moorpark. Martin’s game-winner came after a pass intended for Danny Alexander was deflected by Cuesta’s Matt Andrews.

Earlier this season, Alexander hit a three-pointer as time expired to give Moorpark a 93-92 victory at Cuesta.

Paul Foster scored 18 points for Moorpark (23-8, 4-3).

Valley 70, West L.A. 59--Brian Jackson had 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Monarchs (11-19, 3-7) to a WSC South Division victory.

BASEBALL

Long Beach 6, Canyons 4--Keith Walbridge hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lift Long Beach past the Cougars (3-1) in a first-round game of the Casey Stengel tournament at Cerritos.

Cerritos 8, Valley 3--The Monarchs were held to four hits in the first round of the Casey Stengel tournament. Five stolen bases and three wild pitches helped Cerritos take a 6-2 lead after three innings. Brooks Morris of Cerritos (6-1) went three for three.

Valley dropped to 1-5-1.

Cal Lutheran 11, Pomona-Pitzer 1--Chris Fick hit two home runs and Ray Arvizu drove in four runs to lead the Kingsmen (5-1, 4-0) to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Pomona. Arvizu had two hits, including a home run.

Sam Royal (1-1) pitched eight innings, striking out nine and walking two, for Cal Lutheran.

CSUN postponed--Rain forced postponement of the Matadors’ game at Cal State Fullerton. The game has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at Fullerton.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 75, Oxnard 57--Julie Hardy scored 24 points and Eryn Farney added 18 for the Pirates (25-5, 9-1), who avenged their only conference defeat this season in a WSC North Division game at Ventura.

Farney, a sophomore from Rio Mesa High, came off the bench and went four for four from three-point range.

Blanca Rodriguez had 14 points for Oxnard (8-19, 6-4), which snapped Ventura’s 39-game conference winning streak with a one-point victory on Feb. 2.

Canyons 82, Santa Monica 51--Lori Leon, a transfer from Valley College, scored 18 points to lead the Cougars (18-12, 10-0) to a WSC South Division victory at Valencia. Canyons completed its conference schedule undefeated.

Rebekah Cunnan, among the conference scoring leaders, was held to 14 points, but grabbed 13 rebounds for Canyons. Carlisa Hamagaki scored 16 points and Terra Bruessel had seven assists for the Cougars.

Moorpark 74, Cuesta 55--Joy Garcia hit five of 11 three-pointers and scored 19 points, leading the Raiders (12-17, 9-7, 4-6) to a WSC North Division victory at Cuesta.

Laura Brown had 17 points and four blocked shots, Janett Oriza added 15 points, and Misty Goodnight hit six of seven shots in a 14-point, seven-assist performance for Moorpark.

Cuesta’s Michelle Connell had 22 points and Amy Hines added 18.

Valley 64, Pierce 56--Erica Upton had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Marcella Hairapetian added 12 points and six rebounds to lead the Monarchs (14-18, 8-7) in a Western State Conference South Division game at Valley.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 80, Cal Lutheran 78--Five Athenas scored in double figures in a SCIAC game at Thousand Oaks. Andee Whalen led the way with 16 points on six-for-eight shooting.

Cal Lutheran (6-15, 2-8) was led by Melissa Wood’s 25 points. Regal center Kelli McCaskill had 16 points and 17 rebounds, including nine at the offensive end.
