“REVERIE.” Carol Rosenberger, piano. Delos DE 3113. This is the sequel to Rosenberger’s 1989 recording titled “Perchance to Dream.” The pianist has assembled a program of miniatures and excerpts from larger works that span two centuries, but which are united through their introspective natures. Some of the performances emerge simple and touching, such as those of Liszt’s “Sancta Dorothea” and Schumann’s “Traumerei.” Others, particularly a mannered Arabesque No. 1, by Debussy, and a wholly legato Sarabande from J.S. Bach’s French Suite in G, fare less well. The overall result is monochromatic; it is hard not to daydream while listening to this “Reverie,” which can only help perpetuate the unfortunate and all-too-common concept of music as background.
