HOOP IT UP: The Anaheim Arena will be showcased nationally Monday when Long Beach State meets Memphis State in the first men’s college basketball game at the facility. The 9 p.m. game, part of ESPN’s “Big Monday” package, will be played in Anaheim because the school could not reach a suitable deal with Long Beach Arena. . . . “They welcomed us with open arms,” says Scott Cathcart, Long Beach State assistant athletic director. Seats are still available.

VETS & VETS: Veterans of the Vietnam war, both American and Vietnamese, will celebrate the lunar calendar’s Year of the Dog at a luncheon in Buena Park today hosted by the local Vietnam Political Detainees Mutual Assn. . . . “This is the first time we have been able to invite our American counterparts to our celebration,” says organizer Thu Dinh Duong. “They were very receptive to the idea.” About 4,000 Vietnam veterans and family members are expected to attend.

FIRING HERE: Former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu has known great political highs and lows. Once a power as President Bush’s chief of staff, his love of office perks led to his downfall. Now he’s back on top. . . . As the conservative commentator on CNN’s “Crossfire,” he’s much in demand as a public speaker. But the Fullerton Republican Women Federated gets him Wednesday for free: Sununu is a close friend of one of the members. The group’s announcement calls it “the first time our club has had a world-renowned and powerful national figure.”

Alongside Clinton’s portrait hangs a picture of Vice President Al Gore. Bush never shared billing that way with his man Dan Quayle. . . . It’s a Veep first, federal workers there say. But one of them quipped: “Clinton’s not able to handle the job by himself.”
