Taking a Comedy Detour

Share

For commuters who are fed up with the post-earthquake congestion, Igby’s Comedy Cabaret in West Los Angeles provides an enticing detour--an afternoon “Rush Hour Comedy Break.”

Stand-up comedians volunteer their time at the comedy breaks, which usually feature four performers per hour. Routines last five to 15 minutes, and the performers--and the jokes--are diverse.

“It’s a good environment to try out new material,” said comedian Charlie Marco, who drives from Burbank to do his routine. “There is no real pressure, and it helps me out.”

Owner Jan Smith, who started Igby’s more than a decade ago, thought people needed a good laugh after the earthquake. He figured that because traffic conditions have worsened on the Westside, the comedy break might help get people off the road and provide some laughs too.

Commuters can soothe frazzled nerves from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday evenings. Food and beverages are also available. There is no cover charge or minimum purchase.

“I heard about (Igby’s) from a friend,” said 29-year-old Carlos Narro of Los Angeles. “It was a good idea and I come here as much as I can.”

Igby’s, 11637 W. Pico Blvd., West Los Angeles (310) 477-3553. Rush-hour performances are from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday evenings.
