Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Developer Seeks Study of Quake’s Impact on Site

Officials from the Newhall Land & Farming Co. have asked the city Planning Commission to study for two months possible impacts of the Northridge earthquake on the site of its proposed North Hills housing development.

The 1,418-unit project was to be considered for final approval at the commission’s meeting Wednesday.

But company officials have asked that a public hearing and commission decision be postponed until May 3 so they can more carefully study signs of ground movement caused by the quake, Newhall Land Vice President Mark Subbotin said in a letter to the commission.

Because the topography of the site near the intersection of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway has apparently changed, officials are required to do a re-evaluation, said Carole Maglione, a spokeswoman for Newhall Land.

“This is just a part of responsible and proper planning,” she said.

Associate city planner Fred Folstadd said the staff would recommend that the hearing and the commission’s decision be postponed.
