COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Wagner Rescues Fullerton, Defeats San Diego
Matt Wagner pitched 8 2/3 innings of one-hit relief, and Jeff Ferguson hit a two-run home run as Cal State Fullerton defeated San Diego, 6-4, in the first game of the Anaheim Hilton and Towers Baseball Classic Friday at Fullerton.
Wagner (2-0) entered the game with one out in the first inning after Titan starter Dan Ricabal walked four batters and yielded three runs, two earned.
Wagner allowed only three batters to reach base and struck out six.
Dante Powell’s seventh-inning single drove in Bret Hemphill with the winning run. The Titans (13-2) added an insurance run in the eighth when Jim Betzsold’s bunt single drove in Ferguson.
San Diego led, 4-1, in the fourth inning, but Ferguson’s two-run shot to left made the score 4-3.
Fullerton tied the score in the fifth. Hemphill hit a leadoff double, was sacrificed to third by Craig Skyberg, and scored on shortstop Jack Jones’ sacrifice fly.
Hemphill was four for four with two runs scored and a run batted in, and Ferguson had two hits, two RBI, scored three runs and stole four bases.
The third-ranked Titans play No. 22 Oklahoma today at 6 p.m. at Titan Field.
Fullerton plays No. 1 Georgia Tech Sunday at 4 p.m.

Oklahoma 8, Georgia Tech 6--Oklahoma scored three runs in the second and third innings and added solo runs in the fifth and sixth to beat Georgia Tech, the top-ranked team in the nation.
