Boy, 3, Fatally Hurt When Hit by Truck in Front of His Home

A 3-year-old boy was fatally hurt Sunday when hit by a pickup truck as he darted into the street in front of his home, police said.

The boy, identified as Derek M. Tolentino, died of head and abdominal injuries, police Lt. William C. Stuart said.

The accident occurred about 3:05 p.m. in front of the boy’s home on Demion Lane. Stuart said the boy apparently darted from between two parked cars in front of his home and into the path of a pickup truck.

Derek was rushed to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he underwent emergency surgery. But he died about three hours after the accident, Stuart said.

Stuart said the pickup’s driver, identified as 23-year-old Michael T. Newell Of Huntington Beach, was not cited and did not appear to be the cause of the accident.
