OUTLOOK

A tough team to figure, last year and this season. The Spartans were runners-up in the Santa Ana Elks tournament but missed the playoffs by one game last season. They have a good nucleus back. Parker and Brady give them two solid starters. Brady was a second-team Times Orange County selection as a kicker in football. They had better pitch well because they are unlikely to get much support. The Spartans need players to develop as hitters, something Wilson said hasn’t happened yet. The left side of the infield is strong with McMahon, the starting quarterback last fall, and Case, who was a first-team all-league selection. Halbert was honorable mention all-league, so the Spartans are set at catcher. Then come the questions. The outfield spots are up for grabs, except for D’Amato. Second base is anyone’s guess. There are several good, but inexperienced, pitchers if Brady or Parker falter. The best of them is Hansen, who worked out of the bullpen last season.
