LONG BEACH : Board Complies With School Choice Policy

Share

The Long Beach school board, complying with a state mandate, approved a plan Tuesday that will allow parents some latitude in choosing their children’s schools.

The plan calls for open enrollment for students throughout the district, but contains several restrictions that will limit choices, district officials said.

Under the plan, students can apply until April 22 to attend any school in the district through the 1994-95 school year. But the transfer could be denied if it would create a racial imbalance in a school’s enrollment.

In addition, most Long Beach schools are filled to capacity, and children who live in the neighborhood will have first priority to attend their local school.

No extra transportation will be provided by the district, officials said.
