Dan Henning, former coach of the San Diego Chargers and Atlanta Falcons, was named coach at Boston College on Wednesday.

He succeeds Tom Coughlin, who left the Eagles on Feb. 21 to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars, an NFL expansion team.

At a news conference, Boston College’s president, the Rev. J. Donald Monan, introduced Henning as Dan Topping, who was a former owner of the New York Yankees.

Henning, 51, is still being paid by the Detroit Lions, who fired him in December after two seasons as offensive coordinator. He coached the Chargers in 1989-91 and the Falcons in 1983-86 and has been an assistant with several pro teams.

His college coaching experience has been as an assistant at Florida State and Virginia Tech.

Henning’s pro record was 38-73-1.
