Dollars and the Orchestra

Share

I read with great interest the article detailing the financial troubles being experienced by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (“Tough Road Ahead for L.A. Chamber Orchestra,” Feb. 15).

The article did not mention that the orchestra sometimes works in the pit for the Los Angeles Opera. Don’t they get some compensation for that?

And here is a golden opportunity for our two major classical radio stations (KUSC-FM and KKGO-FM) to help save this orchestra by doing fund-raising. Both could spur listener interest in sending tax-deductible contributions ($5, $10, $15) to the orchestra. Maybe they could bring the conductor or members of the board to the stations to ask for support. To a lesser extent, KCSN-FM, KPFK-FM, KCRW-FM or others that program classical music on a part-time basis might also help.

And, if corporate people could see that there is community support, they might help as well.
