SEAL BEACH : City OKs $188,700 Deal to Repair Pier

Long-awaited repairs to the fire-damaged Seal Beach Pier are expected to begin next month, city officials said.

The City Council this week awarded a $188,700 contract to Pacific Enterprises/Cox Construction to replace several large wood pilings that were burned in a May, 1992, fire which charred a 75-foot section of the pier and damaged a lifeguard station.

The work is to begin in late April and continue for about two months, said City Manager Jerry L. Bankston.

The pier will be closed to the public for about seven days during that period.

City officials and local merchants hope the repairs are completed before summer beach crowds begin converging on the pier.

The fire was covered by insurance, but the city must pay a $100,000 deductible on its claim.

Pacific Enterprises/Cox Construction was selected after a bidding process that took several months.

In addition to making quake repairs, the firm will repair some wood pilings that were damaged during the 1992 Landers earthquake.
