SWEET REVENGE? Former Brea mayor Carrey J. Nelson, who’s been on its City Council 14 years, has had it with various investigations into his potential conflicts over redevelopment--and critics hounding him from the podium week after week. Nelson say he will not seek reelection in November--but he’ll be back at council meetings as a private citizen. . . . Says Nelson: “I’ll be speaking from that podium to some of these people that have taken whacks at me all along.”

GREEN FOR A DAY: The annual two-day Irish Faire, which begins today on Laguna Canyon Road, is more than just a cultural gathering for the Kiernans and the Hartys. Organizer Leonore Coyne says those two families use the occasion of the fair to hold their own annual family reunions. . . . “I just got a call saying the O’Briens will be doing the same thing,” she says. It’s a weekend of leprechauns, bagpipers, step-dancers and green bagels. And lots of Irish potatoes.

BETTER HEALTH? Rancho Santiago Community College District President Vivian Blevins is doing more than making diversity a priority on campus. She was just named to a national education panel on minorities and recently witnessed President Clinton’s White House signing of an executive order speeding up funds for Latino education. . . . Says Blevins: “Hispanics are an important part of the United States and we must do a better job of educating them if the country as a whole is to remain healthy.”

NO CUB AT THIS: If you’re one of those Angels fans who watches even the exhibition games, today’s may be of special interest to you. It’s against the Chicago Cubs, and will be televised on cable’s WGN at noon. Behind the microphone, of course, will be the venerable Harry Caray--starting his 50th year of broadcasting. . . . Harry, whose son and grandson also announce baseball, owns his own sports bar in Chicago. And, of course, the number: 312-HOLY COW.
