SWIMMING / PAC-10 FINALS : Stanford Stays Ahead of Pack

The Stanford men’s swim team continued to dominate the Pacific 10 Conference championships at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach on Friday, winning six of seven events and increasing its lead over second-place UCLA.

Stanford has accumulated 696 points, 276 ahead of UCLA and 324 ahead of third-place USC with today’s six events remaining.

The only event the Cardinal failed to win Friday was the 100-yard butterfly, won by Arizona’s Martin Pepper in 47.60 seconds.

The Cardinal took first through fifth places in the 200 freestyle. Sophomore Joe Hudepohl retained his Pac-10 title, finishing in 1 minute 35.67 seconds. It was Hudepohl’s second individual title of the meet. He won the 50 free Thursday night. Stanford’s Derek Weatherford also won his second title, the 100 backstroke in 46.92, the fastest time in the nation this season.
