OUTLOOK

The Roadrunners had high expectations last year after a second-place season, but finished last. They should move up this year because of their experience. Zuniga batted .282 last year, but the shortstop garnered all-league honors because of his terrific glove. He and Ramirez (5-3) will switch off on the mound, and Pinedo (1.27 ERA) is the closer. The pitching is also bolstered by Eckenwiler and junior varsity standout Tony Torres. Two areas that should be improved by another year of maturity are hitting and defense. Mangram expects much more consistency throughout the lineup after a season of stranding runners--they batted .150 as a team. One player who shouldn’t have trouble making contact is Mejia (.309), who led the team in hitting as a sophomore. The Roadrunners’ excellent team speed should make it easier to manufacture runs and take advantage of opponents’ mistakes.
