A Critical Look at Women of MTV

Share

Chapman University today will screen the video that MTV doesn’t want you to see. “Dreamworlds,” one of Chapman’s Women’s History Month presentations this month, excerpts 165 MTV music videos for a scathing indictment of the way they, and by association, the cable-TV channel, portray women.

“Dreamworlds” producer Sut Jhally, who teaches at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, says that his film “makes the argument that what we see in rock videos is the male-fantasy dream world.”

MTV threatened--but never followed through on--a threat to block the exhibition of Jhally’s 1990 video, which has since been distributed to some 1,500 colleges and universities around the country, he said.

It will be shown at 11 a.m. in Chapman’s Argyros Forum, room 202, 333 N. Glassell St., Orange. Free. (714) 997-6961.
