LAKEWOOD : Firm Hired to Devise Plan for Ex-Naval Site

Share

Lakewood officials who have been feuding with Long Beach over how to use the site of the vacant Long Beach Naval Hospital will spend $50,000 to draft their own plan.

The city’s redevelopment directors voted unanimously recently to hire a Diamond Bar-based consulting firm, GRC-Copenhaver Inc., to prepare alternative proposals for the Navy to consider.

Lakewood has argued that Long Beach’s plan to build a large retail shopping center on the Naval Hospital property--three miles from the Lakewood Center Mall--would cripple the local economy.

Navy officials decided to reopen discussions about the use of the site on Carson Street west of the San Gabriel River Freeway. The first hearing will be April 5 at 7 p.m. at Lakewood City Hall, city spokesman Don Waldie said. A second hearing is expected to be scheduled in Long Beach.
