PICO RIVERA : Group Petitions for Smaller School Board

Share

A community group has launched a campaign to trim the seven-member El Rancho Unified School District Board of Education to five members.

Leaders of the effort began circulating petitions this week to try to force an election on the issue. Organizers must present at least 250 valid signatures to the County Committee on School District Organization, which oversees changes in political boundaries and organization of school districts in Los Angeles County.

Organizers contend that the size of the board has led to conflicts and instability in the leadership of the 10,000-student district, which serves Pico Rivera. They point to the recent ouster of Supt. John T. Sherman, a veteran district employee, who was the fourth El Rancho schools chief to leave the district in five years.
