Women in Film Richer by $21,000 After ‘Angie’ Screening

Women in Film netted $21,000 at its premiere screening of “Angie” at the Avco Cinema Westwood on Feb. 28. WIF President Joan Hyler, Executive Director Harriet Silverman and Director Martha Coolidge celebrated the event with “Angie” star Geena Davis at an after-party at the Armand Hammer Museum. Proceeds will benefit film programs for women.

American Red Cross Earthquake Victims Fund will be the recipient of $10,500 raised by Los Angeles Club Med World Expo at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica on Feb. 1. The funds were proceeds of a silent auction of vacation trips. Host was Jean-Michel Ladau, president and CEO of Club Med Sales Inc.

Los Angeles Women’s Foundation has awarded 12 grants totaling $102,500 from its Emergency Earthquake Relief Fund. Agencies benefiting are Friends of the Family, Koryo Health Foundation, Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women, Mary Magdalene Project, National Council of Negro Women/San Fernando Valley, Ocean Park Community Center for its Turning Point Shelter, San Fernando Valley Neighborhood Legal Services Inc., Senior Health and Peer Counseling, Valley Trauma Center, Venice Family Clinic, Westside Women’s Health Center and Wise Senior Services.

Boys and Girls Club of America received a $15,000 donation from Sunkist Growers on Feb. 9. The clubs provide after-school and summer activities for boys and girls 10 to 17.

Spastic Children’s League, United Cerebral Palsy’s Foothill Committee, raised $38,000 at its annual luncheon March 4 at the Ritz-Carlton, Huntington. Proceeds will benefit programs for children.

St. Joseph Center’s stay-at-home fund-raiser raised $6,700 in donations for its program to aid the homeless and needy. The non-event was put together by Cecelia and Capt. Clifford Waeschle, Joyce Rey and Rick Merrill of Prudential Rodeo Realty.

Catholic Big Brothers Inc. raised $45,000 at its Feb. 12 “Carnaval!” at the Santa Monica Beach Club. CBB provides one-on-one mentoring programs to fatherless youngsters 7 to 14. The benefit, co-chaired by Richard Alonso and Peter R. McDonnell, was attended by 160 guests.
