A Down-to-Earth Gathering Place

Mark Werndorf is living his Hollywood dream as owner of the Daily Planet, an alternative bookstore he opened nearly four years ago.

The bookstore, which features an eclectic selection of magazines and fiction, has become a cornerstone of sorts for this Franklin Avenue neighborhood. Built on the former site of the Radion Burger joint, it allows local activists and artists to use its storefront window space for exhibits on issues ranging from breast cancer to war to politics to AIDS.

“The idea is that the window is a space for local artists to communicate with the neighborhood on issues they would like the neighborhood to take action (on),” said 33-year-old Werndorf, who also works full time as a water and power lineman for the city of Los Angeles.

Inside, there are only about 1,500 titles on the shelves. But there is plenty of variety, with the subject matter ranging from anarchy to erotica. The Daily Planet emphasizes political, social and environmental publications.

“People can get good information (here),” said Werndorf, who often fills special book orders for customers. “They can get information that is pertinent to their lives and interests them.”

Werndorf says he is not in the business to make money, but, rather, to meet new people and stay in touch with the neighborhood.

The bookstore’s atmosphere reflects that attitude. Customers can browse or sit in one of the store’s large, comfortable armchairs.

“There’s also an atmosphere . . . It’s a place where people can come and hang out,” said Obassi Teach, a regular customer and Hollywood resident.
