Henry Cisneros

* In recent weeks, there have been numerous articles and public views on “how things should have been handled” regarding the response to emergency housing needs for quake victims. Despite negative reports of FEMA’s handling of the situation, with all fairness we should applaud HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros for his personal, pro-active role and commitment in expediting our quake-damaged revitalization. Looking at past administrations’ response in the wake of Hurricane Andrew and other disasters, one can only be impressed by what Cisneros has accomplished.

In just one year in office, Cisneros and HUD have had to deal with several natural disasters. Due to Cisneros’ leadership, HUD has responded swiftly to meet victims’ needs. Cisneros’ actions deserve individual recognition, and should not simply be a credit on the President’s approval rating.

We hope President Clinton acknowledges the asset that Cisneros has been, and will compliment him for his fruitful and constructive efforts on our behalf.
