PREP ROUNDUP : University Defeats Corona del Mar Tennis Team in Sea View Opener

The University boys’ tennis team, ranked No. 5 in Division I, beat No. 6 Corona del Mar, 15 2/3-5 1/3, in a Sea View League opener Friday at University.

The Trojans (1-1, 1-0 in league) won eight of nine doubles sets, including three by default when a Corona del Mar doubles player failed to show for the match.

Jason Meyers and Ross Ellis swept, 6-0, 6-3, 6-1, and Robbie Wilkins and Seth Turbo won 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 for the Trojans. Corona del Mar, which lost to No. 4 Dana Hills, 11-10, Thursday, is 2-2, 0-1.

In other Sea View League boys’ tennis:

Woodbridge 15 1/3, Santa Margarita 5 2/3--Tom Ro and Chris Coleman swept at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, to lead Woodbridge (5-0, 1-0).

Saddleback 18, Tustin 3--Eliseo Amezcua swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-3, for Saddleback (2-0, 1-0).

Newport Harbor 15, Irvine 6--The No. 1 doubles team of Peter Koss and Chris Ketcham won its sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for visiting Newport Harbor (3-2, 1-0).

In nonleague tennis:

Fullerton 19, Whittier La Serna 2--Fullerton’s doubles teams swept their sets. Albert Alvara and James Sailhamer won 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, Sam Mankiewicz and Jimmy Phu, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, and Rick Nguyen and Brian Singer, 6-0, 7-5, 6-1. John Howell swept in singles, 7-6, 6-0, 6-0, for Fullerton (1-4).

Canyon 18 1/3, Valencia 2 2/3--Paul Espinosa won 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, Mark Hess won 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, and Kevin Sabet won 7-5, 6-1, 6-0, for Canyon (5-0).

Mission Viejo 15 2/3, Laguna Hills 5 1/3--Brian Gruner swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, for Mission Viejo (1-2). Christian Fernandez and Josh Fair won their doubles sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

San Gabriel Mark Keppel 14, Esperanza 7--Devin Lopez won two singles sets for Esperanza (3-3).

In the Oceanside baseball tournament:

Woodbridge 6, Grossmont 3--Senior Peter Watts’ triple drove in two runs and put Woodbridge in the lead.

Pitcher Josh Tourtellott (1-0) went the distance for the Warriors, striking out 10. Woodbridge is to 2-0.

In nonleague baseball:

Southern California Christian 17, Tri-City Christian 2--Ron Wood struck out the first seven batters. Wood (1-0) allowed two hits and struck out eight in four innings for host SCC (2-1). Wood, Boomer Felten and Tim St. Clair each had three hits.

In the Brea-Olinda softball tournament:

Orange 4, Brea-Olinda 2--Dara Marzolo had two hits and two RBIs and Chris Puccio had two hits for Orange (3-2), which advanced to the title game against Ocean View at 4 p.m. today.

Ocean View 2, La Habra 0--Kathy Ponce struck out 15 in a two-hitter for Ocean View (3-0).

In the Corona softball tournament:

Canyon 3, Moreno Valley Canyon Springs 2--Veronica Lopez had a two-run home run in the third-inning to help Canyon (4-1) win and advance to the semifinals. The Comanches play Corona at 1:15 p.m. today at Butterfield Park in Corona.

In nonleague softball:

Trabuco Hills 3, San Clemente 1--Natalie Galasso allowed only three bunt singles in the complete-game victory for Trabuco Hills (3-0). San Clemente is 0-2.

Southern California Christian 9, Tri-City Christian 8--Freshman Andria Schock drove in the winning run on a single in the bottom of the seventh. Teammate Liz Gaez went two for four with two RBIs for the Flames (3-2).

In nonleague golf:

El Toro 204, University 214--Ben Garner shot one-over 37 at the El Toro Marine Base for El Toro (2-1). University is 2-2.

In Sea View League girls’ track and field:

Santa Margarita 105, Tustin 21--Heather Novak broke a school record in the triple jump with a distance of 35-11 for Santa Margarita (1-0). Novak also won the long jump at 17-2. Barbara Schiel won the 100 and 200 meters with times of 12.8 and 26.8. Tustin is 0-1.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Orange 95, Valencia 76--Shannon Strini won the 200 freestyle in 2:05.71 and the 100 freestyle, in 57.33 for Orange (2-0).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Valencia 91, Orange 61--Martin Acuna, Tony Apodoca and Ryan Christensen each won two races for Orange (1-1).

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Aliso Niguel 1--Senior Brandon Floerke had 13 kills and Mike Mattson added 10 for host Capistrano Valley Christian, which won 7-15, 15-8, 15-1, 15-9. Jeremy McGillis had 32 assists for the Eagles (2-0).
