BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Candiotti Is First to Go Five

Tom Candiotti went five innings--the first Dodger to go that far this spring--and gave up two runs and six hits as the Dodgers lost to the Houston Astros, 3-2, at Kissimmee, Fla.

“It was a tough day for a knuckler, with the wind blowing in like it was,” Candiotti said, “but I felt pretty good. I’m not quite ready to go nine innings, but I felt stronger in the third and fourth and fifth, so that’s a pretty good sign.”

Perhaps the highlight of the game was the Dodgers’ first run, a perfectly executed suicide squeeze, with shortstop Rafael Bournigal bunting across Raul Mondesi without a play.

Leadoff hitter Brett Butler was hit on the shoulder by Houston starter Darryl Kile on the third pitch of the game. Butler was on his hands and knees for about 30 seconds before trotting to first. . . . South Korean Chan Ho Park will pitch in Vero Beach today against the Montreal Expos. The game will be televised back to Seoul by SBS Korea. Channel 5 will televise the game at 10 a.m. . . . Rookie Darren Dreifort is also expected to pitch. . . . Delino DeShields, struck with a bat in a batting cage accident March 2 that broke his left cheekbone, played for the first time Saturday in an intrasquad workout at Vero Beach. The second baseman wore a special mask when he was fielding and running the bases, but not when he was batting.
