A drunken melee involving more than 100 people broke out in front of a popular Malibu roadside eatery Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

More than 16 deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and at least one California Highway Patrol unit converged on a section of beach in front of Neptune’s Net restaurant, 42505 Pacific Coast Highway, about 4 p.m. to quell a drunken party that had apparently grown out of control, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Michael Gullon.

Gullon said one man was arrested for failing to disperse during the melee, which took the officers--along with a Ventura County sheriff’s helicopter unit--more than 90 minutes to control.

“We believe there were several beer kegs involved. It was a situation where people just had way too much to drink,” Gullon said. “When we got on scene, it was out of control.”

The name of the arrested man was not immediately available.

What sparked the melee was not clear Sunday night, but Gullon said arriving deputies saw a fight going in an impromptu boxing ring that had been set up on the beach and several other fights nearby.
