A 70-year-old woman was killed Sunday afternoon when her car slammed into a divider wall on the Santa Ana Freeway and then flipped over, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Virginia Hamburg of Riverside was driving southbound with her infant grandson when she tried to slow down for an upcoming traffic jam near Broadway in Santa Ana, the spokesman said.

Traveling at 55 m.p.h., Hamburg braked too hard, causing the car to skid out of control and into a divider wall before overturning, CHP officials said. No other cars were involved.

Hamburg died at UCI Medical Center.

Her grandson, 4-month-old Keith Anthony Hamburg, was unharmed, authorities said, because he was secured in a baby car seat attached to the front passenger seat.

Virginia Hamburg was not wearing a seat belt, the spokesman said.
