Martin Helps Clippers Extend Their Streak : Pro basketball: Reserve center has 10 points and 11 rebounds in 108-105 victory over Jazz, L.A.’s fourth in a row.

Clipper center Bob Martin, who perpetually blinks, has the look of someone waking up from a long sleep.

But the 7-foot rookie, who had played only two minutes in the last month, woke up the Clippers, who overcame a 20-point first-half deficit against the Utah Jazz to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games, 108-105, before 10,584 at the Sports Arena on Tuesday night.

Martin, who entered the game in the second quarter because starting center Elmore Spencer was ineffective against Utah center Felton Spencer, played the entire second half and had a season-high 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Clippers outscored the Jazz by 59-44 in the second half.

“I got a little winded out there because I hadn’t played for a month in a game,” Martin said. “I was on injured reserve for about three weeks and I hadn’t played much the last couple of games.”

Guard Ron Harper, who had a season-high 39 points in his last game, had 32 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, and forward Dominique Wilkins had 31 points and nine rebounds as the Clippers beat the Jazz for the first time in three games this season.

Martin said Wilkins, who was acquired for disgruntled forward Danny Manning, has helped rejuvenate the Clippers (23-38), who are in the midst of their longest winning streak since they won four games in December of 1992.

“I think Dominique has brought a lot of enthusiasm,” Martin said. “Nothing against Danny Manning, but Dominique is a more exciting player. I’m not slighting Danny, but . . . as a kid I grew up watching Dominique.”

Rookie Clipper forward Charles Outlaw played almost as well as Martin as he helped to neutralize forward Karl Malone.

Although Malone had 34 points and 14 rebounds, Outlaw harassed him throughout the game.

Malone knocked Outlaw to the court in the first quarter and wasn’t called for a foul. But Malone got a technical when he wrestled Outlaw to the court and put him in a headlock in the third quarter.

Malone missed 12 of 26 shots.

“I’m not going to be intimidated by Karl Malone,” Outlaw said. “Basketball is a contact sport these days.”

Outlaw had nine points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. “When I start scoring, people are going to start hearing about me,” Outlaw said.

The Clippers, who trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half, closed the third quarter with an 11-2 run to pull to 82-78.

The Clippers trailed by 96-92, then went on a 10-1 run in 2:14 to take a 102-97 lead on a layup by Martin.

The Clippers, who have played their best basketball of the season over the last three games, played one of their worst opening halves as the Jazz took a 61-49 halftime lead.

Wilkins missed nine of 12 shots in the first half as the Clippers shot only 37% in the opening half. Harper wasn’t much better, missing six of 11 shots.

Spencer outplayed Spencer as Utah took a 35-21 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Jazz center almost registered a double-double in the first quarter as he scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Utah built a 16-point lead. The Clippers’ Spencer had only two points and no rebounds as the Clippers were outrebounded by 19-7 in the first quarter.

Weiss pulled Spencer and inserted John Williams, but he wasn’t any more effective as Utah built a 20-point lead.
