COLLEGE BASKETBALL DAILY REPORT : SOUTHLAND : Comments Draw Reprimand for UCLA’s Harrick

UCLA Coach Jim Harrick was reprimanded Tuesday by the Pacific 10 Conference because of remarks he made about the officiating after a game against Oregon on Saturday.

The action was taken under league regulations prohibiting derogatory public comments on officiating by institutional personnel.

Harrick’s comments came after UCLA’s 80-79 loss at Oregon. The Ducks’ Zach Sellers scored with five seconds to play, and UCLA’s Tyus Edney missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Edney, who was closely guarded by Darryl Parker, said he believed he was fouled.

After the game, Harrick was quoted as saying about the incident: “That’s not hard to call; it’s easy. It’s not a judgment call; it’s a guts call or lack of. It’s ridiculous.”

Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen said Harrick’s remarks were “inappropriate and unfortunate.”

“Conference coaches are expected to express their views of officiating to the conference office through established procedures, not public comments,” Hansen said. “The conference will not permit such criticism of officials to be made.”
