Police shot and killed a woman in a Ford Ranger that had been carjacked 10 minutes earlier Thursday outside an Anaheim motel, authorities said.

It was not immediately known if she was a companion of the carjacker, but police said the owner of the car didn’t know her.

Anaheim police received a report of the carjacking at 7:25 p.m. from the Rustic Inn in the 900 block of South Beach Boulevard, Sgt. Mike W. Zigmund said.

A night shift clerk at the motel said that a man about 21 years of age ran into the lobby and said that he had stopped to aid a man who had motioned for help in the street. When he opened the door to the Ranger, the victim said, the man pulled a gun and ordered him out, according to the clerk, Mohammed Zaman.

The victim called 911 from the motel. An Anaheim police helicopter responding to that call spotted a pickup truck matching the description at Beach Boulevard and the Artesia Freeway. Other Anaheim police vehicles stopped the 1993 Ranger at a call box on the Artesia Freeway between Valley View and Walker streets, near the Orangethorpe off-ramp.

The shooting of the woman apparently occurred as she stepped out of the pickup. Police would not say Thursday night if anyone in the pickup fired a shot, or what circumstances led to the shooting.

“Some shooting occurred, and a female went down,” said Sgt. Jeff C. Kirkpatrick, La Palma watch commander.

The pickup owner told police that he had no idea who the woman might be, and that he had not seen a woman with the carjacker earlier, Anaheim Sgt. Ron Lovejoy said.
