PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Consistency, Marina Errors Lead to Sweep
Capitalizing on Marina hitting errors, Huntington Beach won its second consecutive Sunset League match with a 15-3, 15-8, 15-0 victory Friday night at Marina High.
The Oilers (3-1, 2-0) had consistent passing and hitting from its starting six. Junior Jeremy Bart lead Huntington Beach with nine kills, followed by Nick Ziegler’s eight.
“Our strength is that we have six guys we can set anytime,” Oiler Coach Rocky Ciarelli said. “We pass well, and that’s the key to our team.”
In the first game, the Oilers were up, 6-2, when senior Mike Grave hit an ace and service winner to make it 8-2. Marina then committed four hitting errors in the next eight points.
The Vikings took their only lead of the match, 4-3, in the second game off two Mark Maculey kills. But sparked by a Steve Markham kill at 4-4, the Oilers won the next seven points and then won the game on another Viking error.
Outside hitter Mike Wirthlin led Marina with a match-high 18 kills. Maculey added six for the Vikings (1-5, 1-1).
