Streisand Shows on Sale Sunday

Barbra Streisand’s only Southern California appearances on her much-anticipated U.S. concert tour will be at the Anaheim Arena, May 25, 27 and 29. Tickets for the shows will go on sale Sunday through Ticketmaster outlets and phone lines. Seats are believed to range from $50 to $350, sources said.

The additional U.S. stops will be May 10 and 12 at the U.S. Air Arena in Washington; May 15 and 17 at the Palace of Auburn Hills near Detroit; June 7 and 9 at the San Jose Arena, and June 20, 23 and 26 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The tour, which starts in London on April 20, will use the same format as Streisand’s acclaimed performances Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 at MGM Grand Hotel’s Grand Garden arena in Las Vegas. Instead of a greatest-hits survey, the scripted show followed an autobiographical theme that employed music and stories to comment on themes ranging from Streisand’s childhood dreams to relationships to social responsibilities.

The material ranged from such Streisand standards as “The Way We Were” and “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” to such surprise choices as “What Is This Thing Called Love.” As in the Vegas shows, Marvin Hamlisch will conduct a 64-piece orchestra.

The shows at the 13,000-seat Grand Garden marked Streisand’s return to live concerts after a 22-year break, and were instant sell-outs. The gross--about $7 million per show--more than doubled that of any previous pop event.

In keeping with the Las Vegas and London shows, which raised a total of $6.5 million for various charities, a portion of the proceeds from each of the U.S. stops will be earmarked for charity, said Martin Erlichman, the singer’s representative.
