SANTA FE SPRINGS : School District Bans Smoking on Campus

Share

The Little Lake City school district has joined the growing ranks of area districts to ban smoking on school campuses.

The district’s school board has voted unanimously to ban smoking on school grounds, including in private vehicles in school lots, beginning July 1. Employees who are caught smoking will receive warnings and could be suspended or fired if they continue to light up, officials said. Visitors will be warned, then removed from the premises if they refuse to comply with the no-smoking policy.

The district, which has elementary and junior high schools in Santa Fe Springs and Norwalk, will offer assistance to employees who want to stop smoking, Supt. Maria Ott said.

Guidelines for the new policy were drawn up by a committee of parents and smoking and nonsmoking employees, Ott said.

By July 1, 1996, all school districts that receive state money aimed at educating students in tobacco-use prevention must have tobacco-free campuses, according to state Department of Education regulations.
