Agency for Homeless Raises $125,000 at Its Annual Benefit

Shelter Partnership raised $125,000 at its fifth annual benefit dinner March 16. The nonprofit organization, founded in 1985, develops housing and other resources for homeless people in Los Angeles County. The event, underwritten by the Biltmore, was chaired by Chris Albrecht, senior vice president, Original Programming West Coast for HBO Inc.; and Bob Crestani, executive vice president, William Morris Agency Inc.

United Jewish Fund, Legal Services division, honored Judge Joseph A. Wapner on March 8 at the Century Plaza. United Jewish Fund, a fund-raising arm of the Jewish Federation Council, provides a broad local and international range of social services on a non-sectarian basis.

Cantors Assembly Western Region has announced receipt of $8,000 raised at a sacred music concert at the Sinai Temple in Westwood. The money will help provide scholarships to help train qualified young people to become cantors.

American Cancer Society, Central Los Angeles unit, raised $48,000 at its Sixth Annual Golf Classic on March 7 at the MountainGate Country Club. The benefit was sponsored by Northern Trust Bank and America West Airlines. Proceeds will support cancer research, education and patient services in Central Los Angeles. Chairmen were George McCrimlisk and Robert Goldstein.

Turningpoint School students, preschool through sixth grade, netted $40,000 at its annual Jog-a-thon on March 11. Proceeds will go to a building fund for the athletic department of the Bel-Air school. Students at the coeducational school got sponsors and then ran as many laps as they could in 20 minutes.

Meet Each Need With Dignity (MEND), a Pacoima-based charity, has received a $50,000 grant from the Ahmanson Foundation for earthquake-damage repair and a $50,000 grant from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation for general program support. MEND serves needy families in seven northeast Valley communities with food, clothing, medical and dental care, and other services.

Amie Karen Cancer Fund, a fund-raising arm of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, raised net proceeds of $79,000 at the March 6 Los Angeles Marathon. The funds will provide diagnostic testing, treatment and research for children with cancer and AIDS.

Beyond Shelter, a nonprofit agency supporting homeless families with children, has received a $30,000 grant from the California Community Foundation. Beyond Shelter moves families from emergency shelters into permanent housing and provides up to one year of comprehensive social services following relocation.
