LONG BEACH : Shipyard Gets Contract on 3 Frigates Leased to Taiwan
Workers at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard will refurbish three Navy frigates that will be leased to Taiwan, a spokesman for an Orange County congressman said Thursday.
In an agreement worth several million dollars, Taiwan will pay for any repairs needed on the frigates Joseph Hewes, Cook and Barbey, said Dale Neugebauer, a spokesman for Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach).
The shipyard was targeted in 1991 and 1993 in the ongoing rounds of military base closures but was spared both times.
