SAN FERNANDO : 12 Women Honored for Service Work
As part of Women’s History Month, the San Fernando City Council has presented 12 local women with honorary certificates for community service.
“We want to let you all know that your service to the community of San Fernando has not gone unnoticed,” Mayor Dan Acuna said during the ceremony Monday. “This is our way of saying that the city appreciates what you have done.”
Honorees included Sister Mary Fatima Guevera, Poverello School principal; Elvira Orozco, San Fernando city treasurer; Virginia Diediker, director of Ballet Folklorico dance troupe; Dr. Mary Oda, who has practiced medicine in San Fernando for 30 years; Irene Tovar, San Fernando director of the Latin American Civic Assn. (LACA), and Mary Strenn, San Fernando city administrator.
More are Marianne Barrios, a reporter for the San Fernando Valley Sun, a local newspaper; Maria Reza, San Fernando Middle School principal; Rose Castaneda, longtime assistant to Rep. Howard L. Berman (D-Panorama City); Marie Harris, former honorary mayor of Pacoima; Elva Lima, field representative for GTE, and Viola Lott, longtime worker at the San Fernando parks department who heads the city’s senior club.
