PREP ROUNDUP : Styles, Kovacs Lead Artists in Volleyball

Dan Styles and Szlirad Kovacs each had 11 kills as visiting Laguna Beach swept Trabuco Hills in three games in a Pacific Coast League boys’ volleyball match Thursday at Trabuco Hills.

Laguna Beach, the third-ranked team in Orange County, won 15-5, 15-1, 15-2, to improve to 4-0, 2-0 in league. Kovacs also had 11 blocks.

Trabuco Hills is 4-2, 1-1.

In another Pacific Coast League match:

Costa Mesa 3, Century 0--Lance Merryfield had 10 kills and 10 digs for Costa Mesa (2-3, 1-1). Teammate Andy McNally added seven kills. Century is 0-2 in league.

In Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 3, Tustin 1--Mitch McCoy had 25 kills as visiting Newport Harbor won 15-12, 12-15, 15-12, 15-11. Newport Harbor is 4-2, 4-0. Curtis Logan and Rafter each had 19 kills for Tustin (4-2, 3-1).

University 3, Santa Margarita 1--Derek Rados and Abe Lin each had 16 kills for University (4-2, 2-2). Sophomore Donald Chen added seven kills for the Trojans, who won 15-8, 15-9, 12-15, 16-14.

Irvine 3, Saddleback 0--Jessie Cuevas had 32 assists to lead host Irvine (3-3, 2-2) to a 15-0, 15-4, 15-11 victory.

Outside hitter Jeff Miller lead the Vaqueros with 11 kills and middle blocker Blair Eldridge had seven kills and four blocks.

Corona del Mar 3, Woodbridge 1--Brooks Hoppe had 20 kills and 10 service aces for led Corona del Mar (5-1, 3-1), which won 16-14, 12-15, 15-1, 15-6. Teammate Andy Peykoff had 63 assists, Rob Alshuler had 11 digs and Brad Callahan had 15 kills.

In nonleague volleyball:

Mater Dei 3, Cypress 0--Mark Pozsgai had 16 kills for Mater Dei (2-3) in the 15-3, 15-6, 15-4, victory. Brice Brunsting had eight kills for Cypress (3-5).

In South Coast League girls’ swimming:

El Toro 121, Dana Hills 42--Katie Simmons won the 200 freestyle (2:07.44) and 200 individual medley (2:21.98) and Alice Park won the 100 freestyle (57.15) and 100 backstroke (1:06.49) for host El Toro (5-0, 1-0).

San Clemente 94, Mater Dei 76--Suzi Barker won the 200 medley (2:23.34) and the 100 freestyle (57.02) for Mater Dei (1-3, 0-1).

The Tritons are 1-0 in league.

In South Coast League boys’ swimming:

San Clemente 100, Mater Dei 70--Jon Hewko won the 50 (23.21) and the 100 freestyle (51.68) for the Tritons (1-0 in league).

Don Turk won the 200 medley (2:06.18) and the 200 freestyle (1:55.71) and Mike Ciecek won the 500 free (5:13.98) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.75) for the Monarchs (2-2, 0-1).

El Toro 119, Dana Hills 51--Kevin McIntyre won the 50 freestyle (23.69) and 100 freestyle (52.25) and Brian Pearce won the 100 breaststroke (1:10.55) for host El Toro (4-1, 1-0).

In Century League boys’ tennis:

Foothill 14 1/3, Santa Ana Valley 0--Mike Penn and Nathan Griset swept in No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, for visiting Foothill (11-1, 2-0) in a rain-shortened match.

Canyon 14 2/3, E Modena 2 2/3--Paul Espinosa and Mark Hess swept in singles and Jerry Liao and Heath Kula swept in doubles for Canyon (9-1, 1-0). Espinosa won 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, Hess won 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, and Liao and Kula won 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 12, Century 2--Mike Nguyen swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, and the doubles team of Robert Isaacs and Luciano DeLeon swept its sets, 6-1, 6-1, for Costa Mesa (2-8, 1-1) in a match shortened by rain. Century is 0-2 in league.

In the Sea View League:

University 11 1/3, Newport Harbor 3 2/3--Jason Meyers swept in singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, for visiting University (6-2, 5-0) in the rain-shortened match.

Santa Margarita 21, Tustin 0--No. 1 singles player Francisco Sada swept his sets, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1, and the No. 1 doubles team of James Young and Dan Deen swept its sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, for host Santa Margarita (5-5, 3-2).

In South Coast League gymnastics:

San Clemente 150.1, Dana Hills 52.7--Michelle Iverson won the all-around title with a score of 33.8. She won the uneven bars (8.5) and the balance beam (8.6). Kendra Oaks of Dana Hills won the vault (8.5) and the floor exercise (8.5).
