In this conversational memoir, the 80-year-old founder of ReTree recalls how he helped to plant more than 3 million trees around the world. ReTree is an environmental organization dedicated to planting forests on idle lands wherever they will grow, involving young people in tree-planting and supporting forestry research. Lockyear combines his personal reminiscences with information about trees: how they lift water to branches hundreds of feet above ground, how many seeds a single tree may produce, etc. Although not a great prose stylist, he emerges as a warm, humane man readers may want to adopt as a substitute grandfather.
