Asked to describe the recent outings of Cal State Northridge pitcher Amy Windmiller, teammate Tamara Ivie said it all in one word.

“Phenomenal,” said Ivie, smiling broadly.

It’s been kind of a March Madness for Windmiller, whose no-hitter against Cal State Fullerton on Sunday propelled the Matadors’ 1-0 victory in a losers’ bracket game of the Cal State Fullerton tournament. Southwest Louisiana defeated Washington, 2-1, in the championship game.

In March, Windmiller has been extraordinary. The senior right-hander has thrown five no-hitters, including two perfect games, and has given up only five hits in eight games (52 innings) in March.

But don’t ask her about her success. She is genuinely uncomfortable talking about it. “I know I say this all the time,” Windmiller said, “but I don’t care (about the no-hitters). I want to win. That’s all that matters to me.”

Windmiller (12-1), who had five strikeouts against Fullerton, faced two batters over the minimum, allowing walks in the second and sixth innings.

Although she felt like her “pitches weren’t working well” against the Titans, Fullerton failed to take advantage. Windmiller relied heavily on her rise ball and enticed nine infield popups. Fullerton (12-18) hit only three ground balls.

Meanwhile, the sixth-ranked Matadors (23-4) continued to struggle offensively, providing Windmiller with just enough offense. Ivie, who remains the Matadors’ most consistent leader, provided two of Northridge’s five hits.

Terri Pearson scored from second on Ivie’s two-out single in the first inning. Kelly Hunt and Ivie each hit one-out doubles in the second and sixth, respectively, but both were left stranded at third.

The punchless Matadors will have little time to work out their offensive problems. Northridge returns to Western Athletic Conference play this weekend and will make their toughest trip of the season, playing at Sacramento State and Fresno State.

“Something is missing. I don’t know what it is,” said Ivie of the Matadors’ recent lackluster performances. “Hopefully we’ll find it this week.”
