SIMI VALLEY : Emergency Training Program Considered

Share

Simi Valley city officials will consider adopting a program to train residents to assist each other during disasters.

The Neighborhood Emergency Response program, proposed by resident Tim Hodge, would tap into neighborhood associations and crime-watch groups, offering free training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, search-and-rescue and other emergency procedures.

“If people’s homes are destroyed and damaged, they might not be able to take care of all their needs individually,” said Hodge, who is considering running for the City Council in November. “This program would make it easier for them to get help because people would know what to do.”

Hodge said county firefighters have agreed to provide training in CPR and other emergency responses free.

Mayor Greg Stratton praised the plan and asked city staff to prepare a report for the City Council.

“Something like this can only help when there’s an earthquake or other type of disaster,” Stratton said. “It sounds like a great idea.”
