Fire Department Study Is Extended

A citizens committee examining problems in the Ventura County Fire Department will have two more weeks to complete its study, the Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday.

The supervisors approved the committee’s request to extend its report deadline from April 7 to April 21.

Group members said they were having difficulty finishing their work because of the resignation of their chairman, Bill Esty, who quit several weeks ago.

The supervisors established the committee in October after the auditor-controller’s office concluded that the department was top-heavy with managers, spent too much on overtime and was lax with sick leave.

The supervisors asked the group--which has about a dozen active members--to identify ways to make the department more efficient. Supervisor Maggie Kildee said she agreed to grant the panel the extension because she wants to make sure it can complete the task.

“I want to see them finish the evaluation and see if they can come up with a plan,” she said.
