General Motors Corp. said it is voluntarily recalling about 204,000 minivans from the 1992-and 1993-model years to fix a defect in the vehicles’ seat belts.

The recall involves all 1992 and certain 1993 Chevrolet Lumina Minivans, Pontiac Trans Sports and Oldsmobile Silhouettes. No accidents or injuries have been reported to GM as a result of the problem, the company said.

GM is asking owners to check the lap belt in the center seat of the middle row of seats in five- and seven-passenger minivans, and the left rear seat in the six-seat vehicle.

If the webbing fails to unwind from the seat belt retractor, the seat belt will be replaced at no charge, the company said.

Owners may bring their vehicles to dealers for inspection, GM said.

The problem was detected after records showed an unusually high number of seat belts being replaced under warranty, a GM spokesman said.

GM declined to say how much the recall will cost.
