A 7-year-old Ventura girl died Friday after being struck by a delivery van while riding her bicycle, authorities said.

The accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. in the 300 block of West Simpson Street, just down the street from Sheridan Way School.

Karina J. Arias was pronounced dead 40 minutes later in the emergency room of the Ventura County Medical Center, said Deputy Coroner Mitch Breese.

According to residents and police, the girl had been riding her bicycle when she veered into the street and collided with a delivery van driven by Sukhvir Singh Grewal, 32, of Santa Paula.

Paramedics, who felt a faint pulse at the scene, took the girl to the hospital, but doctors could not revive her. Breese said Karina suffered a major head injury.

Police Cpl. Ray Broomfield said it did not appear that Grewal had been speeding. Hours after the accident, part of Simpson Street remained blocked off as police conducted their investigation.

Neighbors said Karina had been staying with her aunt, who recently moved to Simpson Street. The girl’s parents, Raul and Rosa Arias, live on Sherwin Avenue in Ventura.
