COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Upsets Harvard in Tennis Tournament Semifinal

The 36th-ranked UC Irvine men’s tennis team upset 20th-ranked Harvard, 5-2, Friday at the 15th annual UCI Tennis Classic at the UCI Tennis Stadium.

The Anteaters, playing for the second consecutive day with only five singles players, won at No. 1 singles with Chris Tontz; No. 2, Marc-Andre Tardif; No. 3, Julian Foxon; No. 4, Ken Cruz; and No. 5, Cameran Lindee.

Foxon extended his winning streak to nine, improving to 16-2. Tontz has won his past eight matches and is 11-7 in dual matches this season.

UCI advanced to today’s finals against South Alabama at 1 p.m.

In nonconference women’s softball:

Arizona 5-5, CS Fullerton 3-2--The Titans were able to keep up with Arizona in the early innings of both games, but home runs from Laura Espinoza and Jenny Dolan in the fourth and fifth innings in the second game and key doubles in the first game were too much for Fullerton (16-21). Arizona is 33-1.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--Despite nine kills each from Greg Sternchak and Chad Milling, UC Irvine was swept by UC Santa Barbara, 15-1, 15-3, 15-2.

The Anteaters (1-16, 0-14) got 27 assists and six digs from Jason Hinchman in the loss.

The Gauchos (11-10, 7-7) were led by eight kills each from Carter Reese and Donny Harris. Todd Rogers had 25 kills and Daren Torbet added eight digs for UC Santa Barbara.
