NEW FACE: Meet Hank Stockdale, community cop. As part of a federally funded program aimed at bringing police closer to the communities they serve, Stockdale divides his day between a Pacoima storefront office and the streets of the largely Latino neighborhood (B1). . . . “I have no illusions about being the new sheriff in town,” he said. “But if I can make a difference, then I’m 100% successful.”

TRAPPED: It’s been 10 months since Los Angeles stopped trapping coyotes, and the debate between residents and animal regulation officials continues (B1). . . . “I kinda feel like we have become the fast-food capital for coyotes out here,” said one Woodland Hills woman. . . . The city has agreed to review the policy.

YOUTHS FOR CHRIST: The rise in Christian clubs on high school campuses coincides with an increase in church-going by America’s teen-agers (B1). . . . The U. S. Supreme Court ruled in 1990 that secondary schools must allow religious groups on campus if other non-academic organizations are permitted. . . . About a dozen San Fernando Valley public high schools have such clubs.

LONG TIME COMING: Cal State Northridge senior Amy Windmiller defeated Fresno State for the first time since transferring from there after her freshman year, helping the Matadors salvage a split of a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader (C10). . . . Windmiller, who was 0-3 against the Bulldogs last season, pitched a four-hitter in Northridge’s 4-1 victory. Fresno State won the first game, 5-2.
